Description

Backwood Basics is all about using simple techniques to nurture a more self-reliant lifestyle. Our products and ideas were influenced both by frugal, depression-era parents, and by life in the Cental African Republic. Both Mark and Peggy served as Peace Corps volunteers in the CAR in the early 1980s. Peg was in rural health, and Mark was in aquaculture.
Mark writes about his experiences and observations, from 1950s suburban Minneapolis, through the heart of Africa, and into the present. With food as the central thread, his sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant tales remind us of what is truly important in life, as well as offering tips on aquaculture, composting, pastured poultry, raised bed gardening, container gardening, and hoop house gardening. We even get to go on a dugout canoe trip down the Oubangui river, complete with a hippo encounter.
Until further notice, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this book will go to Doctors Without Borders- one of the organizations on the ground doing what they can to relieve some of the suffering caused by hatred and violence in the CAR.
This book is also available for local pickup, under the Local Curbside Pickup category.

Food, Africa and the Pursuit of Contentedness

Enjoyed reading about the early years and Africa. However, I totally disagree with his comments on veganism. I have been totally vegan for 11 years and Dr says my numbers are all great (about same age as Mark). He lost me at that point. Granted processed foods are processed whether vegan or not.
